Fitting a relay for heated grips and aux. power socket
Transalp 650

-under construction-

A problem with fitting heated handlebar grips, or certainly the older style Oxford grips is the chance the grips could be left on even when the bike ignition is off flattening the battery within a few hours.

The best solution is to fit a relay so when the ignition is off so will the grips.

Originally I fixed the relay to the fairing inner panel, however this necessitated disconnecting the relay every time the fairing was removed. As I had to remove the fairing to fit a new clutch cable so took the opportunity to relocate the relay in a more appropriate position.

After trying different positions the most suitable seemed to be mounted on the fairing sub frame, see images below. I've fixed the relay using an existing front fairing fixing bolt. It was necessary to bend the relay mounting bracket to leave space for the wiring.

All earths were connected together using a self tapping screw into a hole drilled into the sub frame, (fig. 2)

N.B. There should be a 5 amp fuse in the feed from the battery to the relay.

If you want the auxiliary power socket to turn off with the ignition connect the live to the switched side of the relay (marked B on schematic)
